Severe weather has exacerbated damage to the MSC Baltic III, which is grounded in Cedar Cove, Newfoundland and Labrador. The vessel’s hull has sustained significant new damage, with increased plate buckling on both sides and the stern now sitting lower in the water. Additionally, some small salvage equipment onboard has also been found damaged.
The Canadian Coast Guard reports that teams are conducting on-water and shoreline surveys in Cedar Cove and nearby beaches as conditions allow. Following the storm, there has been a noticeable rise in oiled debris, and cleanup efforts are currently underway.
The MSC Baltic III lost power and ran aground in February, approximately 12 nautical miles from the entrance to Bay of Islands. Fortunately, all 20 crew members were airlifted to safety during the incident.
