The newly established Hong Kong Maritime and Port Development Board (HKMPDB) was launched today, featuring prominent figures from the local shipping industry, including Angad Banga of Caravel, Sabrina Chao from SeaKapital, and Bjorn Hojgaard of Anglo-Eastern. This board aims to reinforce Hong Kong’s status as a global maritime hub.

The HKMPDB expands upon the previous Hong Kong Maritime and Port Board, founded in 2016, by increasing its scope and funding. It will advise local authorities on policy formulation and long-term strategies, supported by dedicated staff and enhanced research capabilities.

Historically, Hong Kong was Asia’s leading maritime center, but its prominence has declined over the past two decades. The 2024 Leading Maritime Cities report revealed that Hong Kong has dropped to 12th place among the world’s top shipping hubs, down from fourth in 2019.

Additionally, the Hong Kong Chamber of Shipping was established last year to bolster the city’s maritime credentials. Co-founded by former leader CY Leung and chaired by Hing Chao of Wah Kwong Maritime Transport, the chamber aims to enhance Hong Kong’s international standing in the maritime sector.
