London: IMO General Secretary Arsenio Dominguez opened the 110th session of the Maritime Safety Committee, emphasizing the organization’s pivotal role in maritime security and environmental protection. He expressed sorrow over recent maritime tragedies, including the loss of four seafarers from the MV Wan Hai 503 and incidents involving the MSC Elsa 3, a car carrier fire in the Pacific, and a collision of the oil tanker Adalynn with the VLCC Front Present off the UAE coast.

Dominguez urged member states and the maritime industry to enhance compliance with IMO standards and improve vigilance, emphasizing the necessity for effective emergency responses and information sharing to safeguard seafarers and the marine environment.

The committee, meeting from June 18-27, is addressing various issues concerning maritime security, including advancing the IMO’s greenhouse gas reduction strategy, exploring alternative fuels, and developing a code for maritime autonomous surface ships.

Additional discussions will focus on the International Safety Management Code, addressing violence and harassment, and enhancing cybersecurity measures in response to increasing digitalization. The committee also reviewed piracy and armed robbery incidents, noting a slight reduction in reported cases from the previous year.
