Stakeholders have expressed their support for a recent announcement from the Kenya Maritime Authority (KMA) regarding changes to seafarer trading regulations. This notice highlights significant amendments to the Standard of Training Certification and Watchkeeping (STCW) Code, particularly concerning Personal Safety and Social Responsibilities (PSSR) training.

Industry professionals view these amendments as a vital step toward enhancing the governance of seafarer welfare in Kenya. The updated regulations aim to improve training standards, ensuring that seafarers are better equipped to handle safety and social responsibilities on board vessels.

On April 17, 2025, Eric Katana, CEO of Bandari Maritime Academy, engaged with cadets preparing for shipboard training on CMA CGM vessels in Mombasa. This interaction underscores the importance of practical training in conjunction with regulatory improvements.
