Canada’s Ocean Supercluster (OSC) is collaborating on a $940K project to develop an Amphibian UWILD Remote Robotic Platform. This innovative robot is designed to enhance the speed and accuracy of ship hull inspections while minimizing the risks associated with traditional diving methods. The goal of the project is to create a Launch and Recovery System (LARS) for Innvotek’s Amphibian “Underwater Inspection in Lieu of Dry-docking” (UWILD) solution. Marine Thinking, based in Halifax, NS, will lead the project and work alongside partners Innvotek and Innovate UK from London, England.

The Amphibian UWILD robot will offer comprehensive hull cleaning and inspections, covering large areas both above and below the waterline. It can access confined spaces that are challenging for human divers, allowing for precise defect location and providing valuable data for accurate predictive maintenance analysis. The robot’s remote control capabilities will ensure efficient and safe deployment and retrieval using Marine Thinking’s LARS. Canada’s Ocean Supercluster is investing $330,560 in the project, with additional funding from project partners.

By utilizing advanced technology, the Amphibian UWILD Remote Robotic Platform aims to revolutionize ship hull inspections and maintenance procedures. The project’s focus on enhancing inspection speed and accuracy, while reducing risks for diving crews, demonstrates a commitment to innovation and safety in the maritime industry. With the support of Canada’s Ocean Supercluster and collaboration with international partners, Marine Thinking is at the forefront of developing cutting-edge solutions for underwater inspections.
