The Philippines has secured assurances from Iran regarding the safe passage of Philippine-flagged vessels, fuel, and Filipino seafarers through the Strait of Hormuz, according to the country’s foreign ministry. This commitment followed a conversation between Philippine Foreign Minister Ma. Theresa Lazaro and Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araqchi, where they discussed energy supply security and the welfare of Filipino seafarers.
Lazaro characterized the dialogue as “productive,” highlighting a mutual understanding aimed at ensuring the safety of seafarers and the Philippines’ energy security. The Philippine foreign ministry noted that these assurances would bolster the country’s energy infrastructure.
Given that the Philippines relies heavily on the Middle East for energy imports—primarily crude oil from Saudi Arabia—these guarantees from Iran are expected to facilitate consistent delivery of vital oil and fertilizer supplies. This is particularly crucial as the nation is susceptible to fluctuations in oil prices and potential supply disruptions.
