Iranian authorities have detained 18 crew members from a foreign tanker in the Gulf of Oman, claiming the vessel was carrying 6 million liters of smuggled fuel. This incident was reported by Iranian media on Saturday.
The Iranian government, facing some of the lowest fuel prices globally due to substantial subsidies and a devalued currency, has been actively combating fuel smuggling. The smuggling occurs both across land borders to neighboring countries and by sea to Gulf Arab states.
The crackdown reflects Iran’s ongoing struggle with illicit fuel trade, which poses economic challenges amid existing sanctions and financial pressures.
