A fishing vessel sank off Drogheda, Co Louth, early this morning (May 29, 2025), prompting a swift rescue operation by the Dublin-based Irish Coast Guard helicopter R116. The Coast Guard Marine Rescue Coordination Centre (MRCC) in Dublin received an alert just before midnight after detecting an Emergency Position Indicating Radio Beacon (EPIRB) signal.

In response, MRCC Dublin dispatched the R116 helicopter, along with the Drogheda Coast Guard Unit and Clogherhead RNLI. The helicopter, which was conducting overnight training, quickly arrived at the scene. Utilizing its Night Vision Infra-Red System and night vision goggles, the crew effectively located the two individuals in the water.

Both casualties, who were wearing life jackets, were promptly rescued and transferred to the care of the Health Service Executive (HSE). The successful operation highlighted the critical role of the EPIRB activation and advanced NVIS technology in ensuring the safety of those in distress at sea.
