The International Organization for Standardization (ISO) has introduced a new standard for methanol as a marine fuel with the publication of ISO 6583:2024. This standard was developed in collaboration with various industry stakeholders including shipowners, classification societies, fuel testing services, and governmental organizations to ensure the quality of methanol used as marine fuel worldwide. The document outlines three categories of marine methanol: grade A (MMA), grade B (MMB), and grade C (MMC).

Chevron’s Monique Vermeire, who led the working group that created the standard, highlighted the importance of having specific guidelines for methanol as a marine fuel. While methanol is currently traded based on the International Methanol Producers and Consumers Association (IMPCA) reference specifications, there was previously no international standard specifically for methanol used in marine applications. ISO 6583:2024 fills this gap by establishing requirements and limits for the three grades of marine methanol, with MMA having additional requirements for lubricity and cleanliness.

The new standard, ISO 6583:2024, provides clarity and consistency in the quality of methanol supplied for marine use. Grade MMC allows for wider tolerances in certain characteristics compared to MMB, while MMA includes specific requirements for lubricity and cleanliness. By setting these standards, the ISO aims to ensure the safe and efficient use of methanol as a marine fuel, meeting the needs of ship operators and other stakeholders in the maritime industry.
