Mitsubishi Shipbuilding Co., Ltd., along with Imabari Shipbuilding, “K” LINE, MOL, NYK Line, JMU, and NSY, has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to create a standard design framework for liquefied CO2 (LCO2) carriers and next-generation alternative fuel vessels. This initiative focuses on utilizing decarbonization technologies, such as ammonia fuel, to enhance efficiency in the initial design phase.
MILES Co., Ltd. will lead the initial design efforts, enabling other Japanese shipyards to adopt these standardized designs for functional and production purposes. The collaboration aims to bolster the competitiveness of Japan’s shipbuilding sector on a global scale.
“K” LINE, MOL, and NYK Line are investing in MILES to facilitate this cross-industry effort, promoting ship construction across multiple Japanese shipyards. JMU and NSY are also contributing investments to ensure the widespread adoption of MILES’ standard specifications within the domestic industry.
This MoU represents a significant step toward advancing a sustainable, carbon-neutral society, as the participating companies work together to enhance the Japanese shipbuilding industry’s global standing.
