Lloyd’s Register (LR) has introduced a new risk-based notation called Fire (C, Risk), aimed at enhancing fire safety assessments for container vessels. This notation, part of the July 2025 update to LR’s Rules and Regulations for the Classification of Ships, marks the first application of LR’s ShipRight Risk Based Certification (RBC) methodology to fire safety in container shipping.
The Fire (C, Risk) notation offers a structured framework for shipowners, designers, and operators to evaluate fire risks and implement customized safety enhancements throughout the vessel’s lifecycle. This initiative is designed to help stakeholders identify and adopt best practices for fire mitigation tailored to each vessel’s unique risk profile.
In addition to improving safety standards, this approach aligns with LR’s broader goals of promoting innovation and integrating new technologies. It also supports digital and data-driven verification processes in ship design, fostering a safer and more efficient maritime environment.
