The Odia community in London recently celebrated Bali Yatra with a Maritime Heritage Summit held at the UK Parliament. This event, which took place over two days, aimed to honor Odisha’s rich cultural heritage and its historical maritime legacy. On the first day, the summit at the House of Lords focused on the journeys of the ‘sadhabas’ (sailors) and their relevance in contemporary society. The following day featured a cultural celebration at Riddlesdown Collegiate in Croydon.
Arun Kar, founder of Xpertnest and one of the event organizers, highlighted the importance of showcasing Odisha’s maritime heritage as India seeks to enhance its role in the global economy. He noted that the summit provided a platform to celebrate India’s aspirations for sustainable innovation and collaboration within the Global South. The event was attended by over 115 dignitaries and thought leaders who discussed strategies for achieving a circular economy.
Sweta Mohanty, a spokesperson for the organizing committee, emphasized the importance of raising cultural awareness among parliamentarians. A special message from Odisha’s Chief Minister, Mohan Charan Majhi, was also shared during the summit, further reinforcing the significance of this cultural commemoration.
