The UK Marine Accident Investigation Branch (MAIB) has released a preliminary report on a cargo fire aboard the bulk carrier Atlay on June 27, 2025, while it was loading scrap metal at Albert Dock, Hull. The fire was detected by the master at 09:48, prompting immediate action, including activating the general alarm and calling for the shore operator to assist in cargo discharge. Firefighting teams from the vessel and shore services responded quickly, while the crew prepared for potential evacuation.
By 12:15, local authorities issued a safety alert due to smoke and noxious fumes affecting nearby residents and businesses, leading to temporary closures. The fire was extinguished early on June 28, with no injuries reported. Over the following days, contaminated firefighting water was disposed of, and the scrap cargo was surveyed for hazardous materials.
Initial investigations suggest the fire may have originated from an undischarged battery or another ignition source among the scrap. The cargo, classified as group C under IMSBC Code, lacked adequate screening for hazardous materials, which ultimately led to the incident. Following the event, the cargo facility owner ceased operations, and Atlay’s operator emphasized the importance of thorough cargo inspections.
