Malaysia Seizes Cargo Vessel for Regulatory Breach

On Saturday, officers from the Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency apprehended a foreign cargo vessel for breaching maritime regulations. The interception occurred around 11:32 AM, approximately 3.8 nautical miles northwest of Kuala Baram, by patrol boats from the Miri Maritime Zone.

Captain Mohd Khairol Anuar Saad, the director of the Miri Maritime Zone, reported that initial inspections uncovered multiple violations of the Merchant Shipping Ordinance 1952. These included the absence of valid vessel registration documents, an expired domestic shipping license, and safety equipment infractions related to an inflatable life raft that had surpassed its service period.

Further investigations revealed that the vessel was crewed by nine individuals, consisting of eight Bangladeshi nationals and one Chinese national. The cargo vessel and its crew were escorted to a designated anchorage area off Miri by 2 PM for additional inquiries.

Captain Khairol Anuar emphasized the agency’s commitment to enhancing patrols and enforcement measures to address maritime law violations in Malaysian waters. He urged the public to report any suspicious maritime activities by contacting the Miri Maritime Zone Operations Centre or the Sarawak State Maritime Operations Centre.
