Adam Saeed, the 66-year-old captain of the Kolama boat from Dhonveli, tragically died today after being electrocuted in the engine room. The incident occurred while the vessel was en route to Huvadhu Atoll, having departed from Laamu Atoll around 10:00 p.m. The boat was reported missing at 1:25 p.m., prompting a search operation by the Maldives National Defence Force (MNDF) after communication was lost around 4:00 p.m.

Ibrahim Waheed, President of the Kolamafushi Council, stated that Saeed went to inspect an issue with the ship’s auto pump. It is suspected that he encountered an electrified area, leading to severe injuries when he was caught in the machinery. A source confirmed that Saeed had visible external injuries consistent with electrocution and machinery-related trauma.

Saeed was found unresponsive and transported to GA. Villingili Hospital, where he was pronounced dead upon arrival. Waheed noted that the delay in reporting the incident was due to the vessel being out of network range, complicating communication with authorities. Fortunately, the remaining crew members managed to escape the engine room and steer the boat to safety.

Described as a lifelong seafarer, Saeed was both the owner and captain of the Kolama, with a deep-rooted connection to boating in the region.
