A consortium consisting of Damen, TU Delft, SafeSystems, RH Marine, NHL Stenden University of Applied Science, and MARIN has launched the Maritime AI Innovation Lab. This initiative aims to provide a cutting-edge development environment for the maritime industry, with a focus on enhancing the design and operation of future ships. By leveraging physical modeling, measurements on scale models, simulators, and real-world operations, combined with the latest AI techniques, the lab seeks to create reliable and trustworthy AI models that can lead to operational improvements such as reduced fuel consumption, timely maintenance, and enhanced safety.

The Maritime AI Innovation Lab takes a comprehensive approach to innovation, involving various aspects of ship operations and design. By engaging onboard crew in the development of new working procedures and support tools, the lab aims to improve the efficiency and safety of maritime operations. The first phase of the lab’s activities will concentrate on “safety & workability” and “emission reduction,” focusing on key areas such as sea state, engine performance, hull interaction, and data sharing to build expertise in these areas.

Interested Dutch companies are encouraged to participate in the lab’s workshops to explore collaboration opportunities and propose new research tracks. By fostering collaboration between industry partners and academia, the Maritime AI Innovation Lab aims to drive advancements in maritime technology and operations, ultimately benefiting the entire maritime sector.
