In an effort to enhance boating safety, Maritime NZ, in collaboration with FEDERATION, has initiated a campaign for Safer Boating Week. This initiative aims to raise awareness about the hidden dangers that lurk close to shore, where a significant number of boating accidents occur. Olly Walker-Boden, Managing Director of Federation, emphasized that many New Zealanders are unaware that most boating incidents happen within mere meters of land. To address this, the campaign creatively utilizes the sea as a media platform, engaging boaties directly in the areas where risks are most prevalent.
The campaign introduces “Buoy-Boy,” a playful yet impactful reminder for boaters to prioritize safety before leaving the harbor. According to Adrian Stephenson, Senior Advisor for Communications and Marketing at Maritime NZ, the initiative seeks to save lives by promoting awareness and action. Buoy-Boy serves as a visual nudge, highlighting essential safety rules, such as wearing life jackets and checking marine forecasts, particularly in small crafts where capsizing is common.
The initiative has already garnered attention, with Buoy-Boys appearing in various locations across New Zealand. They are designed to be memorable and shareable, transforming a serious message into a social conversation. Maritime NZ encourages the public to share their experiences with Buoy-Boy, reinforcing the importance of water safety and fostering community engagement.
