Over the weekend, a significant incident occurred at the BWC Terminals facility in Channelview, Texas, where a ruptured pipe released approximately one million gallons of sulfuric acid into the environment. Local officials reported that while a portion of the spill entered the water at the Houston Ship Channel, the majority was contained onshore.
The leak, which began early Saturday morning, was attributed to the collapse of a catwalk that ruptured a six-inch supply pipe connected to an acid tank. Harris County Judge Lina Hidalgo stated that the leak was active from around 2:00 AM until approximately 6:00 AM. Following the incident, two individuals were hospitalized due to breathing issues but have since been released, and nearby merchant ship crews were evaluated as a precaution.
Despite the spill, Judge Hidalgo assured the public that air quality remained unaffected and that there were no disruptions to traffic in the ship channel. Environmental monitoring is underway to assess any potential impact on aquatic life, although no immediate effects have been reported. BWC Terminals, a prominent operator in North America, manages multiple sites along the Gulf Coast, including the location of this incident.
