A new report commissioned by the European Maritime Safety Agency (EMSA) examines the safety of ammonia as a marine fuel. Developed by a consortium led by ABS, which includes the National Technical University of Athens (NTUA) and Fundación Valenciaport, the report builds on existing interim guidelines from the International Maritime Organization.
The study highlights the importance of understanding ammonia’s properties to mitigate safety risks associated with its use in shipping. Through a survey and an online workshop, industry stakeholders provided feedback emphasizing the need for comprehensive safety measures.
The report offers recommendations aimed at enhancing safety protocols for vessels using ammonia as fuel. It underscores the necessity for the maritime industry to adapt and implement these insights to ensure safe operations.
