New Maritime Regulations to Transform Shipping Industry
A significant shift in the shipping sector is anticipated as new international maritime regulations are introduced, according to Lloyd’s Register (LR). Their recent report, Future IMO and ILO Legislation – Spring 2025, details a series of statutory changes set to take effect on May 1, 2025, focusing on environmental protection, safety standards, and the welfare of seafarers.
Among the notable updates is the implementation of the Hong Kong Convention on Ship Recycling, which will commence on June 26, 2025. This convention aims to enhance the sustainability of ship dismantling practices.
Additionally, updates to MARPOL Annex VI will be enforced starting August 1, 2025. These changes will impose stricter requirements for data collection on greenhouse gas emissions under the IMO Data Collection System (DCS), reflecting the industry’s commitment to reducing its environmental impact.
As these regulations roll out, the shipping industry will need to adapt to comply with the enhanced standards aimed at promoting safety, environmental stewardship, and improved working conditions for seafarers.
