The Maritime Technologies Forum (MTF) has released a new report outlining guidelines for the safe inspection of methanol dual-fuel ships, spearheaded by the Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore (MPA). As the maritime sector embraces alternative fuels in response to stringent IMO emission regulations, methanol has gained popularity. However, its flammable, toxic, and corrosive nature poses specific challenges for inspectors.

The guidelines focus on three key inspection phases: pre-inspection preparations, during inspection protocols, and post-inspection considerations. Important recommendations include ensuring inspector competency, conducting dynamic risk assessments, managing hazardous areas, and establishing decontamination protocols. A total of 41 safety recommendations aim to enhance the industry’s confidence in adopting methanol fuel.

Capt. M Segar, MPA’s Chief Marine Officer, emphasized the importance of these guidelines for ensuring inspector safety and efficiency. The report extends beyond inspectors to include professionals involved in various marine operations, reinforcing the MPA’s commitment to a cleaner and safer maritime future. DNV’s CEO, Knut Ørbeck-Nilssen, noted the collaborative effort behind the guidelines, marking a significant step toward the safe integration of methanol fuel in the industry.
