Muscat: The Maritime Security Center has issued a warning to seafarers regarding their reliance on GPS technology for navigation. The Ministry of Defence (MoD) emphasized that those sailing in areas distant from the Omani coast should be particularly cautious, as GPS can suffer from interference, weak signals, or even temporary outages.
In a formal statement, the MoD advised mariners to avoid depending solely on GPS systems. The potential for navigational errors due to these technical issues can pose significant risks, especially in unfamiliar waters.
Seafarers are encouraged to have alternative navigational methods at their disposal. The notice specifically recommends carrying a traditional compass, which can serve as a reliable backup when electronic systems fail.
This guidance aims to enhance safety on the seas and ensure that mariners are prepared for any unexpected challenges they may encounter while navigating away from the coastline.
