On Thursday, the International Maritime Organization (IMO) will celebrate World Maritime Day, focusing this year on environmental protection, a key aspect of its mission. The theme for 2025 is “Our Ocean, Our Obligation, Our Opportunity,” highlighting the ocean’s importance as a habitat, climate regulator, and vital transportation route for global trade, which relies heavily on maritime logistics.
Shipping undeniably impacts the environment, and the IMO has established regulations to address these effects. The organization has developed a range of technical assistance initiatives to support its 176 member states in implementing these regulations, acknowledging the challenges of enforcement that vary by national jurisdiction. Furthermore, the IMO plans to emphasize broader UN efforts to safeguard ocean health, including the recent High Seas Treaty aimed at protecting biodiversity in international waters and ongoing discussions about a potential treaty to limit plastic production, a significant contributor to ocean pollution.
The IMO also seeks to enhance the appeal of the shipping industry as a career choice, particularly for women facing specific challenges in maritime roles. Emphasizing the importance of seafarer wellbeing, Australian Maritime Safety Authority CEO Kaylene Dale reaffirmed the commitment to uphold labor standards within the industry.
Looking ahead, the IMO has outlined themes for 2026 and 2027, focusing on the practical implementation of existing maritime regulations. The upcoming theme, “From Policy to Practice: Powering Maritime Excellence,” aims to ensure that international standards translate into effective action on the water, reinforcing the organization’s dedication to safer and environmentally responsible shipping practices globally.
