The European Anti-Fraud Office (OLAF) spearheaded Operation NOXIA II, a significant customs initiative targeting shipments of illicit goods, including cigarettes, waste, drug precursors, and pesticides. The operation resulted in the seizure of 149.5 million cigarettes, over 3,000 tonnes of illegal waste, 66.5 kg of pseudoephedrine, and substantial quantities of pesticides. This operation highlighted the sophisticated smuggling routes used to transport these goods into the Asia-Pacific region and Europe.

Participating customs authorities from 39 countries, including 17 from the Asia-Pacific and 22 EU Member States, collaborated to share real-time information on suspicious shipments. The operation intercepted over 105 tonnes of tobacco, more than 223,000 e-cigarettes, and 114 liters of e-liquids, preventing a significant influx of illegal products into consumer markets.

Additionally, NOXIA II addressed the environmental threat posed by illicit waste, much of which was misdeclared as reusable materials. The operation revealed fraudulent techniques like triangulation and false declarations, aimed at evading regulatory oversight. Key seizures included harmful pesticides and substances used in the production of synthetic drugs, underscoring the operation’s focus on combating the trafficking of dangerous materials.
