Lloyd’s Register (LR) and Latsco have successfully demonstrated a new digital class assurance standard through data-driven surveys. This collaboration showcases how verified operational data from vessels can fulfill class survey requirements without sacrificing safety or technical integrity.

The proof-of-concept was conducted on the HELLAS MARGARITA during its voyage to Singapore. Using LR’s Digital Survey Test Procedure, the team remotely tested and verified the vessel’s auxiliary engine alarms, controls, and safety systems through raw data capture. This was later validated by a physical inspection, confirming that the digital method provided the same level of assurance and safety as traditional approaches.

The results indicate that data-driven methodologies can match or even surpass the technical assurance of conventional onboard surveys. Although current regulations still mandate physical inspections, this project highlights the potential for more efficient and scalable compliance processes, reducing the necessity for physical presence and enhancing fleet management.

Following this success, LR and Latsco aim to expand their methodology testing across more vessels and systems, with the goal of establishing a pilot scheme for digital class assurance.
