Trafigura has finalized plans for four medium-sized ammonia carriers, marking a significant step in the emerging ammonia-fueled shipping sector. Announced in April 2024, these vessels are part of Trafigura’s initiative to explore alternative fuels, including LNG, methanol, LPG, and biofuels, as the company manages around 400 ships and organizes over 5,000 voyages annually.

HD Hyundai Mipo has confirmed the dual-fuel propulsion engines for the carriers, which are set to be delivered starting in 2027. Construction is expected to commence in the latter half of 2026, with completion targeted for 2028. The vessels will measure 623 feet (190 meters) in length and 98 feet (30 meters) in beam, with a transport capacity of 45,000 cubic meters for liquefied gas, including ammonia, LPG, and vinyl chloride monomer.

Ammonia’s storage capabilities are highlighted, as it can be kept in pressurized or low-temperature tanks, making it suitable for large-scale transport. The shipyard received its first order for ammonia carriers in 2023 and has developed advanced safety features to prevent leaks. Trafigura remains committed to advancing low-carbon solutions in the shipping industry to facilitate decarbonization.
