The retired tugboat Polar King has returned to service, thanks to the dedicated efforts of the Alaska Marine Lines (AML) team and other Lynden companies. Built in 1974 at McDermott Shipyard, this 50-year-old vessel underwent a significant overhaul, enabling it to tow barges between Seattle, Hawaii, and Western Alaska ports. Initially retired, Polar King was chosen for refurbishment after years of service, with the project taking around 16 months from teardown to sea trials.

AML Port Engineer Kris Mullan noted that the tug was stripped to its bare hull and rebuilt with new equipment, including updated hydraulic systems, electronics, and a redesigned deck for easier engine access. At its peak, 60 workers, including various vendors, contributed to the project, working six days a week to ensure its success.

The AML Marine Maintenance team played a crucial role in maintaining barge operations during the overhaul. Kris highlighted the efforts of team members like Jeannette Doyle and Kent Connelly, as well as the logistical support from Alaska West Express drivers. He also praised Western Towboat for their invaluable guidance throughout the rehab process. The result is a simplified, safe, and operationally efficient Polar King, poised for many more years of service.
