The Port of Tyne has made a significant investment by purchasing the UK’s first fully electric foiling pilot vessel. This milestone acquisition is set to enhance the safety and efficiency of the Port’s operations, particularly in transferring pilots to ships delivering essential goods and cargo to the northeast of England. The vessel, designed and built by Artemis Technologies in Belfast, is scheduled for delivery before the end of the year.
The Artemis EF-12 Pilot, powered by Artemis’ patented eFoiler technology, is a cleaner alternative to traditional diesel-powered vessels. This innovative vessel produces zero operational emissions, contributing to the Port of Tyne’s goal of delivering a fully net-zero pilotage service. The integration of advanced hydrofoil and electric propulsion technologies ensures a smooth, quiet, and safe journey for pilots and crew members.
The investment in the electric foiling pilot vessel aligns with the Port of Tyne’s commitment to reducing emissions and decarbonizing its operations. This move marks a major step towards achieving a more sustainable and environmentally friendly maritime sector in the UK. The Port’s dedication to embracing new technologies and practices highlights its proactive approach to addressing climate change and promoting a greener future for the industry.
