PortXchange has urged the global port and shipping community to take immediate action on decarbonization rather than waiting for perfect emissions data. Sjoerd de Jager, Managing Director of PortXchange, emphasized that ports already possess sufficient emissions data and that the focus should be on making meaningful changes rather than debating data accuracy. He warned that delays lead to unnecessary emissions, advocating for action based on current knowledge rather than future hopes.
The company pointed out a critical flaw in the industry’s climate strategy: while some ports have made strides in reducing Scope 1 and 2 emissions through electrification and operational upgrades, many are neglecting Scope 3 emissions, particularly those from vessels and hinterland transport. De Jager cautioned that ports could appear compliant while failing to address significant emissions sources, resulting in a credibility gap.
PortXchange’s EmissionInsider platform aims to bridge the gap between data and action, helping ports identify and reduce emissions across various transport modes. With increasing scrutiny and new compliance demands, the company encourages ports to leverage existing data for immediate decarbonization efforts, stating that proactive operational decisions will yield real results.
