The Yemeni Armed Forces recently released footage of the Houthi attack on the bulk carrier MV Eternity C, which occurred on July 7, 2025. During a briefing, Migrant Workers Secretary Hans Leo Cacdac confirmed that five Filipino crew members and an Indian armed guard were rescued, while the fate of the remaining crew of 22 is still uncertain. Cacdac noted conflicting reports about the crew’s status, with the Houthis claiming to have kidnapped some members, while the U.S. condemned the act as terrorism.
The U.S. Embassy in Yemen called for the immediate release of the kidnapped crew, emphasizing the Houthis’ violent actions and their designation as a terrorist organization. The MV Eternity C was reportedly attacked using drone boats and missiles while en route to Eilat, Israel, eventually sinking near Hodeidah, Yemen.
Cacdac stated that the Philippine government is collaborating with the Department of Foreign Affairs and international partners to gather information and coordinate rescue efforts for the missing crew. Investigations revealed that the vessel violated safety protocols by traversing the Red Sea twice, prompting suspensions of the licensed manning agency and the ship’s principal, with potential legal actions being considered. President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. has initiated a comprehensive support effort for the families of the missing crew members.
