The Bahamas Maritime Authority (BMA) has released an investigation report regarding a tragic incident involving a crew member on a Bahamas-flagged passenger vessel. The crew member fell from a height onto a lashing platform between two lifeboats while the vessel was docked. Despite immediate medical assistance, the individual succumbed to injuries at a local hospital.
The incident occurred after an abandon ship drill when the crew member remained near the lifeboats for an unknown reason. At the time, he, along with others, was not wearing fall protection gear, opting instead for more comfortable headgear due to the heat. Although hard hats and harnesses were available, they were not routinely utilized, contributing to the risk of the fall.
The investigation concluded that the victim died from hypovolemic shock caused by severe abdominal trauma. Review of CCTV footage revealed that most crew members, including the victim, chose not to wear the necessary protective equipment during the drill. Recommendations for Anglo-Eastern Management include enhancing safety measures and ensuring supervisors enforce protective gear requirements effectively. The BMA emphasizes the need for improved communication regarding safety protocols for crew working at heights.
