Satlink, a prominent provider of technological solutions for the maritime and fishing industries, was honored with the EUROFISHING award at the World Maritime Week Awards for its dedication to innovation and sustainability in fishing. The award was received by Kathryn Gavira, the Director of Science and Sustainability at Satlink, during the World Maritime Week congress held in Bilbao from March 19 to 21.
The award recognized the impact of ReCon, a groundbreaking circular economy initiative by Satlink that gives a new purpose to satellite buoys used in tropical tuna fishing. By refurbishing and reusing these buoys for scientific and environmental projects, ReCon prevents them from becoming technological waste. This program, which involves over 150 vessels and 25 companies across the three main oceans, sets a new standard for sustainability in the maritime sector.
In her acceptance speech, Gavira highlighted that ReCon embodies Satlink’s commitment to collaboration and utilizing technology for sustainability and ocean protection. She emphasized that the initiative represents the future of sustainability in fishing, achieved through the collective efforts of the fishing fleet, local partners, and the dedicated Satlink team. The award serves as a testament to the shared commitment towards responsible and efficient technology use in marine environments.
Satlink’s ReCon initiative has not only made a significant impact in promoting sustainability in the fishing industry but has also fostered partnerships with local communities and environmental projects. By repurposing satellite buoys and engaging various stakeholders, Satlink has set a new standard for sustainable practices in the maritime sector.
