Last month, Hydrex conducted an underwater bow thruster operation on a ferry in Stockholm during winter. The work was strategically scheduled during a planned break in the ferry’s timetable, enabling Hydrex to perform the task without disrupting service or requiring a drydock visit.

The team collaborated closely with the ferry crew to ensure seamless integration with their operational plans. Equipment was mobilized from their Antwerp office, while the rest of the team arrived separately. One group prepared for the underwater tasks, while another focused on internal preparations, ensuring an efficient workflow once the operation commenced.

After removing the tunnel grids, the existing bow thruster was disconnected and lifted out. Instead of reinstalling the old unit, a new thruster was provided, while the removed unit was sent ashore for refurbishment by the owner’s selected service providers.

The new thruster was fully assembled, allowing for installation without the need for a dry environment, which is typically required for fitting blades separately. Once positioned in the tunnel, all connections were secured, grids reinstalled, and final checks confirmed the system was ready for operation.
