Singapore and India have recently signed a Letter of Intent (LOI) to collaborate on maritime digitalization and decarbonization efforts. The agreement was formalized by Teo Eng Dih, Chief Executive of the Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore, and R. Lakshmanan, Joint Secretary of the Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways (MOPSW) of India. Together, they aim to work on projects related to maritime digitalization and decarbonization, with a focus on engaging relevant stakeholders and establishing a formal partnership through a memorandum of understanding for a Singapore-India Green and Digital Shipping Corridor (GDSC).
India, known for its strength in information technology, has the potential to emerge as a significant producer and exporter of green marine fuels. Meanwhile, Singapore, a crucial transshipment and bunkering hub, boasts a vibrant research and innovation ecosystem. The collaboration between the two countries is expected to pave the way for the establishment of the Singapore-India GDSC, fostering enhanced cooperation and speeding up the development and adoption of technologies that reduce greenhouse gas emissions and promote digital solutions in the maritime sector.
The Singapore-India GDSC, once operational, will serve as a platform for joint efforts to advance zero or near-zero greenhouse gas emission technologies and digital solutions in the maritime industry. This initiative is a significant step towards a more sustainable and environmentally friendly maritime sector, leveraging the strengths of both countries to drive innovation and progress in the field of maritime digitalization and decarbonization.
