Space Norway Teams with SSTL to Revolutionize Vessel Detection

Space Norway and SSTL have formed a strategic partnership aimed at enhancing space-based surveillance capabilities for global clients. This collaboration will leverage Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) technology to provide real-time imaging across extensive areas. Additionally, onboard AIS technology will aid in the detection and classification of maritime vessels, ensuring accurate monitoring.

SSTL is responsible for satellite production, while Space Norway, a specialist in space services, will oversee maritime monitoring efforts for the Norwegian government, commercial entities, and international partners. Marte Kalveland, Director of Earth Observation and Innovation at Space Norway, expressed enthusiasm about the partnership, stating that the radar technology is poised to fulfill the long-awaited vision of High Resolution Wide Swath (HRWS) imaging. Once operational, the satellites will offer unparalleled surveillance capabilities with high-resolution imaging in real time, catering to a global market.

SSTL emphasized its spacecraft configurability as a significant advantage. Andrew Cawthorne, managing director of SSTL, noted that this agreement broadens their SAR portfolio, enabling them to provide tailored spacecraft options for clients prioritizing privacy and service in their specific areas of interest. Space Norway is owned by the Norwegian state.
