Stena Line Ports Ventpils in Latvia has received its first electric Konecranes Gottwald ESP.7 Mobile Harbor Crane, ordered in mid-2024 and operational since early 2025. This crane enhances the port’s efforts to modernize and become more energy-efficient, crucial for bolstering trade between the Nordic and Central Europe.

The ESP.7 crane boasts a hybrid drive system, combining electric power from the port’s grid with a diesel generator for backup. This setup minimizes exhaust emissions and lowers operating costs compared to traditional diesel models. “We are excited about the efficiency of the Konecranes Hybrid Drive,” said Mārtiņš Gende, Managing Director of Stena Line Ports Ventspils, highlighting the crane’s flexibility for servicing diverse vessels sustainably.

With a lifting capacity of 125 tons, the new crane can handle containers, general cargo, project cargo, and bulk materials, replacing an older Gottwald crane from 1988. Hans-Jürgen Schneider, Regional Sales Manager at Konecranes, emphasized their commitment to meeting modern port needs through innovative hybrid and electric technology, contributing to a more eco-efficient operational framework.

This initiative aligns with Konecranes’ vision to reduce customers’ carbon footprints while enhancing material handling efficiency, reflecting their continuous commitment to technological advancement and sustainability in the industry.
