Taiwanese shipping giant Yang Ming Marine Transport Corporation has ordered six 8,000 TEU-class methanol dual-fuel-capable containerships from Nihon Shipyard, Imabari Shipbuilding, and Shoei Kisen Kaisha. The agreement includes three vessel purchases and three newbuilding contracts, with deliveries expected to start in 2028.
This initiative is a pivotal component of Yang Ming’s fleet modernization and decarbonization strategy, providing stable mid- to long-term capacity and enhancing its global service network. These new ships will be the first of their kind in Yang Ming’s fleet, designed to eventually replace the older 5,500 TEU-class vessels, many of which have been in operation for over 20 years.
Yang Ming’s collaboration with Japanese shipbuilders reflects its commitment to advancing green shipping technologies. The new ships will feature engines designed for future conversion to green methanol, as well as high-efficiency propellers and energy-saving rudders to boost performance and fuel efficiency. This investment highlights Yang Ming’s proactive approach to sustainable shipping practices in a changing maritime landscape.
