Progress is underway to operationalize the National Maritime Information Sharing Centre (NMISC) in Tanzania, enhancing the country’s maritime security. A national workshop held in Dar Es Salaam from August 4-7 gathered ten national agencies and IMO experts to create a practical roadmap for the Centre. This initiative, part of the EU-funded “Safe Seas for Africa” project, highlights Tanzania’s dedication to regional cooperation under the Djibouti Code of Conduct and its Jeddah Amendment.
Ms. Mtumwa Said, Director General of the Zanzibar Maritime Authority, emphasized the workshop’s strategic importance in identifying priority areas and bridging gaps in maritime security. Ms. Winnie Maina, Regional Programme Assistant at IMO, noted that the meeting strengthened coordination and cooperation across national and regional agencies, bolstering maritime safety in the Western Indian Ocean.
During the workshop, participants assessed existing frameworks, identified areas for technical assistance, and explored mechanisms for information sharing. The resulting roadmap will guide future technical workshops and support the NMISC’s long-term success. This collaboration is expected to enhance Tanzania’s leadership in regional maritime security and contribute to the broader goals of the Safe Seas for Africa initiative.
