The United Republic of Tanzania has expressed interest in learning from Nigeria’s developing marine and blue economy to replicate similar initiatives in East Africa. This announcement was made by Tanzanian High Commissioner Selestine Gervas Kakele during a meeting with Nigeria’s Minister of Marine and Blue Economy, Adegboyega Oyetola, on June 30, 2025. To facilitate this collaboration, Tanzania plans to send a team of maritime experts to study Nigeria’s key government agencies.

High Commissioner Kakele also pledged Tanzania’s support for Nigeria’s bid to reclaim a seat on the International Maritime Organization (IMO) Council, citing strong bilateral relations and gratitude for Nigeria’s past support of Tanzania’s own maritime ambitions. He emphasized the importance of strategic maritime cooperation between the two nations.

Minister Oyetola welcomed the support, highlighting that Nigeria’s election to the IMO Council would enhance Africa’s influence in global maritime governance. He noted that Nigeria’s extensive coastline and active maritime policies position it as a worthy representative for Africa. The Minister also discussed ongoing initiatives, including the establishment of a national shipping carrier and enhancing intra-African maritime trade under the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA).
