UK Commits to Ocean Safety and Sustainability on World Maritime Day 2025

This year’s World Maritime Day, celebrated on September 25, carries the theme “Our Ocean, Our Obligation, Our Opportunity.” This theme resonates with the Maritime and Coastguard Agency’s (MCA) vision, emphasizing the UK’s dedication to maritime safety, security, and environmental protection. Over the past year, the UK Government has led efforts in innovation and sustainability within the maritime sector.

The MCA has focused on enhancing the future workforce by modernizing cadet training, improving services, and prioritizing seafarer welfare. Additionally, the agency has embraced technological advancements in search and rescue operations, pollution response, autonomous shipping, and green shipping initiatives, including alternative marine fuels.

Looking forward, the MCA plans to continue its efforts in ocean protection and seafarer support, launching the UK Maritime Innovation Hub and backing green projects through the Government’s UKSHORE programme. Maritime Minister Keir Mather also reached out to Secretary-General Arsenio Antonio Dominguez Velasco, congratulating the International Maritime Organization (IMO) on World Maritime Day, which has been celebrated since 1978.

MCA Chief Executive Virginia McVea highlighted the importance of reflecting on the ocean’s role in the global economy and the shipping industry’s responsibility in protecting marine environments. The MCA remains committed to safeguarding lives, advancing maritime technologies, and preventing pollution, honoring the contributions of seafarers to global trade.
