The UK launched the latest round of the Clean Maritime Demonstration Competition (CMDC6) on January 16, 2025. The competition aims to support clean maritime technologies such as electric, hydrogen, ammonia, methanol, and wind power. With £30 million ($37 million) in new decarbonization funding, coastal communities and businesses are expected to benefit, driving economic growth and job creation in line with the government’s Plan for Change.
Projects funded by CMDC have included the installation of Britain’s first electric chargepoint network in ports, a large-scale retrofit of a hydrogen research vessel, and the implementation of a carbon capture system on a vessel. The investment is part of the government’s Plan for Change, aiming to boost economic growth and create jobs while transitioning towards zero-emission shipping.
Innovate UK will open the sixth round of CMDC on January 24, with applications closing on April 16, 2025. This round presents an opportunity for UK innovators to participate in a renowned maritime transport R&D grant funding program focused on decarbonization. The total investment through CMDC now stands at £159 million, showcasing the economic benefits of green maritime funding on local jobs, industries, and economies.
