In a recent address to the UN Security Council, Secretary-General António Guterres emphasized the urgent need for maritime security, stating that oceans are “sending a clear SOS” due to increasing threats such as piracy, trafficking, and cyberattacks. He highlighted a staggering 47.5% rise in piracy incidents in early 2025, particularly in Asia’s busy shipping lanes, and ongoing attacks in the Red Sea and Gulf of Aden.

Melina Travlos, President of the Union of Greek Shipowners, warned that a halt in global shipping could collapse the world economy within 90 days, as shipping is vital for 90% of international trade. Christian Bueger from the University of Copenhagen echoed this concern, citing the significant economic impact of the Ever Given blockage in 2021. He called for a systematic approach to maritime security that reflects the interconnected nature of modern threats.

Guterres proposed a three-pronged strategy: upholding international law, addressing root causes of maritime insecurity, and fostering global partnerships. He urged nations to commit to the UN Convention on the Law of the Sea and invest in coastal communities to combat poverty and crime, emphasizing the need for collective action to secure maritime spaces for future generations.
