The UN Development Program (UNDP) commended Mexico for its recently adopted National Policy for the Sustainable Management of Seas and Coasts, referring to it as a significant advancement in long-term ocean governance. Known as the “Sustainable Ocean Plan,” this policy replaces the previous framework from 2018 and aims to align national efforts with global sustainability goals. Published in the Official Gazette of the Federation, the plan emphasizes a balanced approach to environmental protection and sustainable ocean-based production.

The Sustainable Ocean Plan establishes a comprehensive vision that acknowledges the interconnection between ocean health, biodiversity, and social well-being. It integrates national priorities such as sustainable fisheries, blue tourism, and renewable ocean energy while focusing on enhancing ocean science and data sharing to facilitate informed decision-making. Key objectives include preserving marine ecosystems, promoting responsible ocean industries, and reinforcing legal frameworks to improve enforcement and transparency.

Developed by the Intersectoral Commission for the Management of Seas and Coasts (CIMARES) and involving multiple federal agencies, the plan reflects over two years of collaboration and consultation with various stakeholders. It aligns with Mexico’s National Development Plan for 2025-2030 and supports international commitments like the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and the Paris Agreement.

UNDP highlights ongoing initiatives aimed at addressing marine pollution, such as the Clean and Healthy Oceans project, which targets pollution linked to agricultural practices. Additionally, Mexico’s early implementation of the Biodiversity Beyond National Jurisdiction treaty further enhances its commitment to marine conservation, showcasing the country’s proactive stance on sustainable ocean management.
