As Women in Maritime Day approaches on May 18, the International Maritime Organization (IMO) has released a video message from Secretary-General Arsenio Dominguez. He urges the maritime industry to accelerate efforts toward achieving gender equality. The day is dedicated to celebrating women in the sector and promoting their visibility while supporting the UN Sustainable Development Goal 5.

Despite some advancements in leadership roles, women remain significantly underrepresented in maritime, making up only 2% of seafarers, primarily in the cruise industry. This stark statistic underscores the need for continued advocacy and action.

This year’s theme, “Ocean of Opportunities for Women,” emphasizes the importance of education, mentorship, and policy changes. It calls for cultural shifts to dismantle barriers that hinder women’s participation in all facets of maritime work.

The initiative aims not only to honor women’s contributions but also to inspire future generations to pursue careers in this vital industry. By fostering greater inclusion, the maritime sector can unlock a wealth of talent and innovation, ultimately benefiting the entire industry.
