Earlier this week, officials from the Australian Maritime Safety Authority (AMSA) conducted a thorough inspection of the Liberia-flagged bulk carrier BBG Wuzhou upon its arrival at the Port of Newcastle in New South Wales. This inspection revealed several significant issues concerning the ship’s compliance with maritime regulations.

AMSA officers discovered multiple deficiencies, including the underpayment of crew wages, inadequate food provisions, and the lack of free drinking water for the seafarers onboard. As a result of these findings, the ship was detained due to its unseaworthiness and substandard conditions.

Further investigation revealed that the crew had not received their wages for nearly seven months, amounting to a staggering AU$68,994.15 (approximately US$48,497). This situation raises serious concerns about the treatment of maritime workers and the enforcement of labor standards within the shipping industry.
