The International Seafarers’ Welfare and Assistance Network (ISWAN) has released new guidance aimed at enhancing the mental wellbeing of seafarers during the maritime industry’s shift to zero carbon. The publication, Taking a Seafarer-Centred Approach to Decarbonisation, provides actionable recommendations for seafarers and industry stakeholders, focusing on the psychological and operational challenges posed by rapid regulatory changes.

The guidance stems from a 2023 global survey of 400 seafarers and 55 shore-based professionals, revealing that while many support decarbonisation, they are experiencing increased workloads and stress due to new technologies. Concerns about potential criminalisation for unintentional regulatory breaches were also highlighted.

ISWAN reintroduces the concept of ‘technostress,’ emphasizing the need for a comprehensive approach that fosters communication between ship and shore, and values seafarers as key partners in the transition. Recommendations include revisiting crewing models to alleviate fatigue and embedding psychological safety into company culture.

Industry leaders stress the importance of prioritizing seafarer welfare amid technological advancements, asserting that a people-first approach is essential for sustainable development. For more details, visit ISWAN’s website.
