The Department of Migrant Workers (DMW) and the Philippine Embassy in Finland have praised the 19 Filipino crew members aboard the Greek merchant vessel Cymona Eagle for their heroic rescue of Finnish solo rower Jari Saario. The incident occurred in early January when Saario, attempting to be the first to row solo across the South Atlantic from Cape Horn to Cape Town, found himself adrift after his boat was damaged in a severe storm.

Saario spent 36 hours in perilous conditions, battling hypothermia and rough seas, before being rescued by the Cymona Eagle. The DMW highlighted the crew’s bravery, noting they navigated through treacherous weather, including winds and waves exceeding seven meters. Local reports indicate that Saario is an experienced ocean rower, well-acquainted with the risks involved in such expeditions.

During a courtesy visit to Philippine Ambassador Domingo Nolasco on February 2, Saario expressed profound gratitude to the Filipino crew for their care during his seven-day stay aboard the ship. He praised their hospitality, even mentioning a thanksgiving party organized in his honor before his arrival in Cape Town.

Both the DMW and the Philippine Embassy emphasized that the crew’s actions reflect the highest standards of seamanship and humanitarian service, showcasing the professionalism of Filipino maritime workers and enhancing their global reputation.
