OneCare Group’s Marine Medical Solutions has called for enhanced safeguarding measures to protect the health of seafarers. The organization proposes mandatory health declarations for crew members living with HIV, Hepatitis B, or Hepatitis C. Dr. Jens Tülsner, the company’s founder and CEO, emphasized that seafarers with these conditions should not face discrimination, as these health issues can be effectively managed. He acknowledged the inherent risks of life at sea, particularly regarding blood-borne transmission, and stressed the importance of balancing privacy with safety.
Currently, seafarers are not obligated to disclose such health conditions before boarding, a policy aimed at reducing stigma. However, Marine Medical Solutions believes this approach leaves a significant gap in safety protocols. The company suggests that seafarers with these conditions should sign a confidential declaration, affirming their commitment to manage their health responsibly and to inform designated personnel if necessary for crew safety.
By implementing these measures, executives believe trust can be strengthened, stigma reduced, and a clear framework for safeguarding established within the maritime environment. Tülsner reiterated that this initiative is not about exclusion, but rather about fostering responsibility and ensuring the safety of all crew members.
