Six Filipino seafarers, who reported experiencing severe working conditions and over two months of unpaid wages, were safely repatriated to the Philippines from Suriname. They arrived at NAIA Terminal 3 on the evening of December 26, 2025. Their return was facilitated by KLM Royal Dutch Airlines, where they were warmly welcomed by Department of Migrant Workers (DMW) Assistant Secretary Maria Regina Angela Galias.
Upon their arrival, the seafarers received immediate financial assistance through the AKSYON Fund as initial support. The Overseas Workers Welfare Administration (OWWA) also ensured their well-being by providing hotel accommodations and arranging transportation back to their home provinces, prioritizing a safe and dignified return.
This successful repatriation was the result of effective collaboration among the Migrant Workers Office in Washington D.C., the DMW’s Seabased Accreditation Bureau, and the AKSYON Unit. The DMW emphasized its ongoing commitment to safeguarding the rights and welfare of overseas Filipino workers, particularly those facing abuse and labor violations.
Looking ahead, the seafarers intend to pursue legal action in January 2026 to seek justice and recover their unpaid salaries, highlighting the importance of addressing labor issues faced by overseas workers.
