The Sailors’ Society, a global maritime charity, has initiated an emergency appeal for seafarers affected by the ongoing conflict in the Strait of Hormuz. CEO Sara Baade emphasized that innocent crew members are disproportionately suffering due to the turmoil in the region. She highlighted the distressing scenes of burning ships and the fear experienced by crews caught in this dangerous maritime battleground.

One poignant case is that of 25-year-old Dalip, who tragically lost his life during the first night of the conflict when a missile struck his ship. His family is struggling to cope with the loss, particularly his mother, who has fallen ill. Cousin Debendra expressed gratitude for the support from the Sailors’ Society, which has been assisting families like theirs during this crisis.

The charity’s Crisis Response Network has been actively supporting distressed families and seafarers caught in the conflict. Over the past nine months, they have also aided the families of an Indian crew imprisoned in Iran after their ship was seized. Although the crew has been cleared, their release has stalled, leaving them in a precarious situation.

Baade noted that the charity relies on donations to sustain its 24/7 support services for seafarers. She urged the public to consider contributing to their efforts, which are crucial in providing assistance to seafarers and their families during these challenging times.
